DIMAPUR — Road accidents in Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland districts have recorded a steady decline in the first half of 2025, according to data provided by the Dimapur Traffic Police (DTP).

Between January and June this year, only 40 road accidents were reported across the three districts, marking a significant drop from the same period in previous years. The corresponding figures for the first half of 2024 stood at 58, 163 in 2023, and 368 in 2022.

The number of fatalities also reflected this declining trend, with 21 deaths reported between January and June 2025, compared to 26 each in both 2023 and 2024. In 2022, a total of 20 fatalities were recorded despite the highest number of accidents reported that year.

The number of injuries similarly decreased over the years—from 148 injuries in the first half of 2022 to 105 in 2023, 60 in 2024, and 40 in 2025.

According to year-on-year comparisons, 2023 saw a 55.7% reduction in road accidents from 2022, followed by a 64.4% reduction in 2024 from 2023, and a further 31% reduction in 2025 from 2024.

The DTP attributed this consistent downward trend to sustained awareness drives on road safety for both drivers and the general public. They also credited the installation of essential road safety appurtenances as a contributing factor to reducing accident severity and frequency.

“The general public and drivers are becoming more aware of road safety and thereby also contributing to the reduction in the number of accidents,” the DTP stated, pointing out that in comparison with 2022, the overall reduction in road accidents by 2025 exceeds 80%.

The DTP further suggested the inclusion of road safety topics in school curriculums to ensure wider awareness and continued reduction in road accidents in the future.

As part of efforts to enhance road safety and improve transparency for auto-rickshaw commuters and traffic personnel in Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland, the Dimapur Police had introduced the Auto Rickshaw Display Card System on December 16, 2023.

Since its implementation, approximately 6,000 auto-rickshaw display cards have been issued, enabling traffic personnel to regulate and manage auto-rickshaws more effectively.
