DIMAPUR — Driven by a vision of “Towards Self-Sufficiency”, Rev. N Subong Aier helped form the Nagaland Pig Farmers’ Association (NPFA) in 2013 to produce sufficient quality local pork for the state.
What began as an idea has grown into an organised network of 62 registered pig farmers from all over Nagaland, each required to maintain at least 10 breeding sows or 30 adult pigs to qualify as members.
Today, under the NPFA, there are around 34 tertiary farms spread across 34 villages in Nagaland. In each village, the NPFA has provided 24 piglets to establish these farms in partnership with local churches, creating a sustainable model to produce more piglets for local needs.

From the NPFA and these tertiary farms, the approximate assessment of revenue generated in 2023–2024 was around INR 30 crore. For Rev. Aier, the many success stories he has witnessed among members and tertiary farm set-ups represent his own achievement and the fulfilment of the vision he had when starting the NPFA.
In this interview with Eastern Mirror, Rev. N Subong Aier, president of the NPFA, shares insights and guidance for aspiring pig farmers.
How would you describe pig farming to someone young?
First of all, one should have knowledge beforehand on how to rear pigs, work hard, and set a target on what needs to be achieved through pig farming. Manpower is very important too. If you succeed in pig farming, there will be financial stability and self-sustenance, and undoubtedly one can run a family without any hindrance.
Could you outline a typical day on your farm?
I usually supervise the workers in order for them to carry out their daily work, which starts in the morning and lasts for some hours, then later in the noon and again in the evening.
Which breeds of pigs do you rear, and what are their key characteristics?
Hampshire pigs, which are large black pigs. These are the ones that are reared on my farm. This breed of pig grows faster and is adjustable to the hot climate, such as in Dimapur.
What skills and qualities are essential for success in pig farming?
One needs to be hard-working and maintain strict biosecurity measures on the farm. One should train for at least a month on a pig farm to know well about pig farming from the grassroots level.
What educational background is helpful?
Any person can start pig rearing and set up a farm.
What initial costs should students consider if they want to start pig farming?
To start pig farming, one needs to have a plot of land, housing structures to rear the pigs, purchase of piglets, feeds, etc. Overall, one can start pig farming with a few lakhs. But of course, one can initially start and try rearing the pigs in smaller numbers.
How do you ensure the welfare and health of the pigs?
Strict biosecurity measures are maintained on the farm. The pigsty is sanitised from time to time, with a veterinary doctor's visitation as and when required. We provide only good-quality feeds and use clean water.
How do you market and sell?
To date, there have been no obstacles or hindrances in selling off the pigs. People come to the farm to purchase live pigs.
