DIMAPUR — The first edition of PsychWave, a two-day psychology fest, got underway at Mount Mary College, Chümoukedima, on Thursday in observance of World Mental Health Day on the theme “Exploring minds, inspiring waves”.
According to an update, the event is being organised in collaboration with the District Mental Health Programme, District Hospital Dimapur, and Gracious Life Foundation and had the presence of MLA Manpon C Konyak as the guest of honour.
Delivering the keynote address, Manpon encouraged students to view conversations about mental health as a necessity rather than an option. Sharing personal experiences, he recalled how three years ago he was bedridden and how the “desire to live” became a turning point, reminding everyone that mental and physical health are deeply connected.
He emphasised the significance of “the little nitty-gritty moments in life” and said that a handshake, a smile, or a pat on the back are gestures that build encouragement and hope.
Reflecting on his first electoral loss, Manpon spoke candidly about resilience and perseverance, urging students to remain grounded yet ambitious.

Touching on broader social issues, he reflected, “How long shall we live with the rich history of the past?” calling for renewed efforts to move beyond pride in heritage toward progress, unity, and self-improvement.
He urged the audience to rise above tribalism and factionalism, highlighting how these forces contribute to social and psychological divides.
Encouraging civic participation, he reminded the youth that “politics is not only for the rich” and that every citizen must play a role in clean and responsible politics. “We have often been critics of society rather than torchbearers,” he said, inspiring students to act rather than observe.
He recalled the collective empathy shown during the COVID-19 pandemic, urging everyone to carry that same compassion forward: “Before we are chained again, let us be better humans.”
Earlier, Dr. Basant Giri, IQAC coordinator, Mount Mary College, delivering the welcome note, highlighted the college’s focus on the four Cs—communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity—which form the foundation of its educational ethos.
PsychWave 2025 will continue on October 10 with a panel discussion on the topic “Social stigma on mental health and building a supportive society”.
The discussion will feature experts, mental health professionals, and advocates who would share insights on creating awareness, breaking stigma, and fostering a culture of support.
