KOHIMA — Following customary law, the Porütso Khel of Jakhama on Saturday vandalised the Kohima residence of Samuel, the accused in the murder of Vihozhonu Zao.

One khel member said that they vandalised the rooms because murder is considered a dreadful act.

He added that the youths had vandalised other rooms but left Vihozhonu’s and her younger brother’s rooms untouched.

The khel members have also ostracised the victim’s aunt and grandmother. ‘Taking the possible involvement of the aunt and grandmother into consideration, they were ostracised as well,’ the khel member said.

The Porütso Khel demanded the death penalty and warned they might take lethal action themselves if the courts did not.

Earlier, the khel stripped the accused of the right to use the title ‘Zao.’ They reiterated on Saturday that he would not be allowed to use the title.

The police arrested Samuel on November 4 after he confessed to killing his 22-year-old niece in a “fit of rage” on October 24.
