DIMAPUR — The Phekmi Collegiate Forum (PCF) has condemned the frisking and alleged harassment of one of its bona fide members, who is also the general secretary of the Phek Students' Union, by personnel of the 39 Assam Rifles on March 12 at Phek Village.
In a statement, the forum said the individual was subjected to frisking and questioning on suspicion of being associated with an underground faction.
The forum viewed the action with concern and disappointment, stating that such treatment of a student leader was unjustified and humiliating. It stated that student leaders who actively work for the welfare of the student community should not be subjected to suspicion and intimidation without credible grounds.
“The Assam Rifles, which proudly proclaims the slogan ‘Friends of the Hill People,’ is expected to uphold this principle both in letter and in spirit.
However, incidents of this nature reflect a disturbing contradiction between the force's stated motto and its conduct on the ground.
“While security forces play an important role in maintaining peace and stability, taking undue advantage of the provisions under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) to harass innocent civilians only erodes public trust and damages the relationship between the security forces and the people,” the forum stated.

The PCF maintained that respect for civilians, especially students and youth leaders, must remain a priority and that security operations must be conducted with fairness, professionalism, and due respect for human dignity.
Actions that unnecessarily target innocent individuals only create fear, resentment, and misunderstanding within society, it stated.
“In light of this incident, the Forum strongly urges the concerned authorities of the 39 Assam Rifles to exercise greater responsibility, restraint, and sensitivity while dealing with civilians,” it added.
The forum further called upon the higher authorities to take note of the matter and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future.
“The Phekmi Collegiate Forum stands in full solidarity with the aggrieved individual and reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the dignity, rights, and welfare of its members as well as the broader student community,” it added.
