Phek Government College students complete legal internship

Eighteen students of Phek Government College completed a three-day legal internship at the District Court in Phek under NEP 2020.

DIMAPUR — In accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which gives credit points to students who complete internships and places emphasis on experiential learning, a three-day internship programme for Phek Government College's fifth semester political science students was held at the District Court in Phek from August 25 to the 27th.


According to an update, a total of 18 students participated in the programme, which was in collaboration with the Phek District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to give students hands-on experience with the legal and judicial system.


Mezivolu T. Therieh, district and sessions judge-cum-chairperson of Phek DLSA, gave the programme's opening keynote address, welcoming the students and urging them to gain knowledge from actual court situations.

Throughout the programme, the students witnessed court proceedings, providing them with a firsthand understanding of the administration of justice.


On the first day, Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel (LADC) Vethothi Vero gave an explanation of the procedure for drafting petitions, affidavits, and other legal documents after Sekhotso Rokha, Retainer Lawyer DLSA Phek, discussed the Indian court system.


Assistant LADC Rakulu Venuh emphasised the significance of being aware of one's rights when being arrested. A visit to the Vision Open Shelter Home in Phek marked the end of the day.


Sessions on important Indian laws were held on the second day.


The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was introduced by Mezivolu T Therieh, and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Civil Procedure Code (CPC) were explained by Keneinou Swuro, deputy LADC. Panel lawyer of Phek DLSA, Thukutalu Chizo, discussed the composition, significance, and function of legal services authorities.


On the last day, Sekhotso Rokha spoke about the Nagaland Village Council Act after Mezivolu T Therieh spoke about the Indian Constitution, specifically mentioning Article 371A and its importance in Nagaland.


At the conclusion of the programme, internship certificates were awarded to each participating student.
