  • DIMAPUR — The Phek District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PDCCI) expressed serious concern over the continued lack of progress in the construction of the Chakhabama-Kikruma road section under Package II, which is part of the Kohima-Jessami road and National Highway 29 (NH-29).

  • In a press release, the PDCCI stated that this delay has had a detrimental impact on trade, commerce, and daily transportation across Phek district, particularly affecting the Chakhesang community, which relies heavily on this critical route.

  • The PDCCI, raising concerns regarding the credibility and accountability of the contractor, questioned whether National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has taken adequate steps to monitor and enforce the contractual obligations.

  • “These obligations must align with provisions under the Indian Contract Act, 1872, and the National Highways Act, 1956, as well as ensure adherence to public service standards under the Right to Service frameworks,” the statement read, adding that access to reliable infrastructure is an essential part of the Right to Life under Article 21 of the Constitution of India, and the citizens of Phek are constitutionally entitled to safe, accessible, and functional roadways.

  • The PDCCI urged the executive director of NHIDCL, Kohima, to treat this matter with the highest level of urgency, stating that immediate restoration and maintenance of the existing road must commence without further delay.

  • The body also called upon the state government, district administration, and all relevant stakeholders to take coordinated action to ensure the timely and accountable completion of the project.

  • “This road is of strategic importance to the Phek district and the Chakhesang people, and its continued neglect is unacceptable PDCCI remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for the economic and infrastructural rights of the region and calls for urgent government and administrative intervention,” it concluded.
