DIMAPUR — The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Peren, celebrated Kisan Diwas or National Farmers’ Day on December 23, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, India's 5th Prime Minister.
The programme was held at the council hall, Veterinary colony, Jalukie town, with 132 farmers from Peren district attending. It was also telecast by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.
Kisan Day serves as a timely reminder to recognise farmers' contributions, also to address farmers' problems and improve their quality of life. The day was celebrated on the theme of ‘Empowering Annadata for a prosperous nation,’ an update stated.
Dr. KL Meena, Principal Scientist & Head, KVK Peren, explained the history and significance of the Kisan Diwas celebration. He shared the salient features of the Viksit Bharat G RAM G scheme, under which 125 days of guaranteed wage employment for unskilled labour with timely wage payment.
He advised the farmers to take advantage of schemes for improved farming.
Dr. Prashant Kalal, SMS-Fruit Science, KVK Peren, who chaired the programme, gave a lecture on ‘Sustainable farming approaches’ for increasing farmers' income.
He advised farmers to adopt good agricultural practices, technology-based farming with animal husbandry, usage of biofertilisers and biopesticides in crop cultivation for chemical-free crop production.

Iruga Zeliang, councillor of Jalukie Town Council and guest of honour, advised the farmers to adopt the various agricultural schemes for enhancing their income and livelihood status.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, and Bhagirath Choudhary, Ministers of State for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, addressed the farmers through a live meeting.
They encouraged farmers to adopt sustainable farming technologies to achieve Viksit Bharat.
Farmers interacted with the KVK scientists about various government schemes and other challenges in farming. Thereafter, vegetable seeds were distributed to all the farmers.
ICAR-KVK Dimapur: KVK Dimapur, under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) – Research Complex for North-Eastern Hill (NEH) Region, also marked Kisan Diwas at its conference hall, reaffirming its commitment to agricultural extension, farmers’ empowerment, and policy awareness.

The event brought together local farmers, agricultural experts, and extension workers for a day of recognition, knowledge sharing, and engagement with recent developments in rural employment policy, an update stated.
During the programme, KVK Dimapur appreciated and thanked the farmers for their contributions to crop production and allied farming activities, reflecting the Centre’s ongoing support for technology adoption and livelihood enhancement.
Inputs and advisory support were provided to the participants. A brief lecture on Kisan Diwas was delivered by Dr. Akshay Ujjwal, SMS (Agronomy).
In line with the broader policy context, the event included awareness sessions by Dr. Bendangla Imsong, SMS/CTO on the newly enacted Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025 (VB-G RAM G Act), a landmark rural employment and livelihood law that replaces the long-standing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
Experts from ICAR-KVK explained the key features of the Act, highlighting its implications for farmers, rural households, and allied sectors. Farmers were encouraged to understand how the new provisions may interface with agricultural productivity, on-farm work opportunities, and community-based rural enterprises.
Open discussions allowed participants to ask questions and gain clarity on how the legislation fits within existing schemes and support mechanisms available to rural populations. Vegetable seeds and organic manure were distributed to the participant farmers. Altogether 62 participants attended the programme.
