DIMAPUR — A major landslide struck Rüzazho village in Phek district on the night of September 17, blocking the flow of Tüsürü River and damaging large areas of paddy and maize fields.

According to Rüzazho village development board (VDB) secretary, Rukuneyi Sapuh, the landslide occurred in the early hours following days of incessant rainfall. The incident disrupted the natural flow of the river, leaving many fields submerged.

Sapuh said paddy and maize fields belonging to more than 25 farmers were affected, with several maize plots completely washed away. He added that the damage was particularly devastating as the crops were in their ripening season.

“The unexpected happening has deeply affected the lives of the farmers,” he said, pointing out that villagers depend largely on paddy cultivation for their livelihood. He warned that the loss of this year’s harvest has left many with no option but to struggle with food shortages.

He further stated that the farmers’ annual plantation work has been jeopardised and appealed to the departments and authorities concerned to physically inspect the affected areas and provide compensation to the farmers on humanitarian grounds.
