KOHIMA — The third annual Cancer Survivors Day, organised by Dr. K&T Keditsu Foundation in collaboration with Rev. Moa Longchari Cancer Foundation, was observed at Hotel Vivor, Kohima, on Sunday.
Speaking at the programme, cancer surgeon and trustee of Dr. K&T Keditsu Foundation, Dr. Keduovinuo Keditsu Chielie, recalled that cancer survivors had been meeting regularly to share their experiences and support one another.
She said the group also visited hospitals to pray for cancer patients.
Inspired by their efforts, Dr. Chielie initiated the first Cancer Survivors Day celebration in November 2023 at Putuonuo Hospital, where around 42 cancer survivors participated.
She said the encouraging response from participants prompted the organisers to observe Cancer Survivors Day annually on the first Sunday of June in line with global celebrations honouring cancer survivors and their triumph over the disease.
She expressed satisfaction over the growing participation each year and noted that more than 150 cancer survivors and caregivers attended this year’s programme, the highest turnout recorded so far.

Dr. Chielie said the foundation would continue to collaborate with other support groups and organise similar programmes in the coming years.
The programme brought together cancer survivors across age groups, including an 89-year-old participant, the oldest survivor present, and a nine-year-old survivor, the youngest attendee.
Cancer survivors Seyiekobei Rutsa, Khanai Rova and Neisanyü Vihinuo shared their journeys of hope, courage and resilience.
Delivering a caregiver’s reflection on the theme “The strength behind the battle,” Bokali Haralu spoke about the mental and emotional challenges faced by caregivers.
Recounting her experience of caring for her husband, who later succumbed to cancer, she encouraged caregivers to seek counselling and support whenever the burden became difficult to bear.
The programme also featured worship songs led by cancer survivor and Cross Connection Outreach Missions team leader Khrieselhou Bos Metha, while caregiver Thejasenuo Kire and friends presented a special musical number.
