An orientation on Inclusive Education under NEP 2020 was held at Tseminyu by SCERT Nagaland and SDEO Tseminyu, highlighting disability rights.

DIMAPUR — A one-day orientation programme on Inclusive Education (IE) based on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 was organised by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Nagaland, in collaboration with the Sub-Divisional Education Office (SDEO) Tseminyu on August 29 at EBRC Hall, Tseminyu.
According to an update, in the inaugural programme, a short speech was given by the Civil SDO, Tseminyu, Tsidi. In his speech, he encouraged the teachers to make difficult concepts simple for all students to understand.
He further encouraged the NGOs, church, and the Rengma Handicapped Union to unitedly work for uplifting the cause of the citizens in education and wished both the participants and the resource persons a happy learning experience.
The resource persons for the day were Daniel Thong Seb, vice principal and head, IE and ICT; Rukuse Sakhrie, music therapist from Jo Foundation Inclusive School; and Dr. Asunu Thong, MS, TB Hospital Khuzama.

Seb, in his session, gave a brief explanation about Inclusive Education in the perspective of NEP 2020 and conducted activities to develop empathy skills. He also mentioned the different Acts, including the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, where different types of disabilities are highlighted. He concluded his session by introducing the basics of Nagaland Sign Language and handed over the module to the participants.
Sakhrie stressed the importance of using music as a therapy to calm hyperactive children. He further said that music therapy is not only about singing but about understanding the person’s needs to address problems in a holistic manner.
Dr. Thong, in her session, shared her experience as a parent of children with special needs (CWSN) and advised the teachers and NGOs on how to support them with patience, love, and tender care.
The SDEO Office and SCERT team resolved to support one CWSN who wished to pursue further education. A similar programme was held in DIET Pfutsero on August 27.
The participants were from 45 government schools, eight churches, a private school, the Rengma Handicapped Union, and parents of CWSN, making a total of 65 participants.
