DIMAPUR — Widespread condemnation has followed the alleged sexual assault of a Chakhesang woman in a moving auto rickshaw, on June 15. Multiple organisations across Nagaland have voiced outrage and demanded immediate legal action against the perpetrators.

The Chakhesang Mothers’ Association (CMA), in a note, said such crime breeds fear, insecurity and trauma and demanded that law enforcement agencies investigate the matter with all seriousness and urgency, showing zero tolerance for violence against women.

“The CMA will not remain silent in the face of injustice or violence against women in any form,” it said, urging all right-thinking citizens to join in combating these social evils to foster a dignified and secure environment for women in the homeland.

The Dimapur Chakhesang Council (DCC), condemning the act, said such a person has no place in a civilised society and demanded immediate and stern action from the government and law enforcement agencies.

The DCC also urged the concerned auto driver union to immediately suspend the membership and other driving privileges of auto driver Nur Islam.

The Dimapur Rengma Students' Union (DRSU), describing the act as “cowardly and inhumane”, extended its “unwavering support to the victim and her loved ones”.

The DRSU, while commending the members of the public who acted swiftly to assist and report the crime, noted that preventive measures must also be taken to deter such incidents from recurring, including improved public safety standards and stricter background checks on commercial transport operators.

The Tenyimi Students' Union Dimapur (TSUD), in a statement, said it looks up to and has faith in the law enforcement agencies to conduct a swift and transparent investigation and deliver an efficient and effective solution, ensuring that the victim receives accurate legal and fair support.

The Chakhro Angami Kuda Students' Union (CAKSU), expressing “strongest condemnation and deep concern”, said it places full trust in the concerned authorities to ensure swift and uncompromising legal action.

It also denounced the misuse of tribal identity by individuals falsely claiming to belong to the Naga community, saying such misrepresentation not only causes confusion but also tarnishes the image of indigenous people.

“We urge the authorities to treat this matter seriously and take strict steps to verify and prevent such false claims,” it said.

The Chakhesang Students' Union (CSU) said that the increasing vulnerability of women in public spaces is unacceptable and demanded that perpetrators be booked under the harshest provisions of the law, with justice delivered swiftly and uncompromisingly.

“We stand in unwavering solidarity with the victim and her family. The Chakhesang Students' Union will relentlessly monitor this case until justice is served,” it said.
