One person was reportedly killed and houses burnt amid Yimkhiung-Tikhir violence in Kiphire, prompting prohibitory restrictions across affected areas
KOHIMA — One person was reportedly killed and more than a dozen houses were burnt down amid violence between members of the Tikhir and Yimkhiung communities in parts of Kiphire district on Saturday, according to local sources.
The violence reportedly affected Zaonger, Longtsunger and Pokphur villages, as well as Pungro town, with houses set ablaze and properties damaged.
According to local sources, the confrontation began after members of the Yimkhiung community allegedly disrupted celebrations of the Tikhir community’s Tsonglaknyi festival in Zaonger and Longtsunger villages.

One person was reportedly killed in a firing incident in Longtsunger, sources said. The circumstances surrounding the death could not be independently confirmed at the time of filing this report.
The violence also spread to Pungro town, where at least six houses were reportedly burnt down and other properties damaged.
Following the incidents, the Kiphire district administration imposed prohibitory restrictions in the affected areas in an effort to prevent further violence and maintain public order.
