DIMAPUR — The Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD) has issued a clarification following “possible misinterpretations” of its previous statement in the media.
The NWHD stated that it is not against local women or entrepreneurs engaged in selling Naga traditional attire to earn their daily livelihood, whether in markets or private shops.
The organisation emphasised that its concern lies in ensuring that such sales are carried out in ways that respect and maintain the originality, authenticity, and cultural value of traditional attire and ornaments.

The NWHD reiterated its support for and encouragement of women pursuing entrepreneurship in traditional attire and textile craft, provided it is done through proper channels that honour and uphold cultural values.
However, the NWHD maintained that it strictly prohibits the sale, display, or distribution of any traditional attire, ornaments, or designs belonging to any tribe by non-Naga individuals or traders without prior permission from the competent authority.
“Our traditional attire carries deep meanings and cultural significance passed down from our forefathers. When sold inappropriately or without understanding, these garments risk being misrepresented and misinterpreted,” the statement read.
The NWHD reminded that it is a collective responsibility to protect and preserve traditions while empowering women in respectful, meaningful, and sustainable ways.
