DIMAPUR — The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department, has issued a weather update forecasting localised thunderstorms and lightning with moderate to light rain across the state from October 8 to the 11th.
According to the NSDMA, the districts of Kiphire, Kohima, Mokokchung, Peren and Tuensang are likely to experience heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on October 9 and 10. The authority cautioned that strong winds and lightning could disrupt communication and connectivity during this period.
It further warned that lowland and foothill areas, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Baghty, Tizit and Tuli, may be vulnerable to waterlogging and flash floods due to high precipitation in the hill sectors. The NSDMA urged residents in such areas to take precautionary measures, such as keeping important documents safe, avoiding floodwaters, disconnecting electrical appliances, and boiling or chlorinating drinking water.

Similarly, residents in hilly districts were advised to remain alert for possible landslides, avoid the path of debris flow, and pay attention to unusual sounds such as cracking trees or moving rocks, which could signal imminent danger.
The NSDMA has also directed all district disaster management authorities and relevant departments to remain on high alert to safeguard lives and property during this period.
For any emergencies, the public has been advised to contact the State Emergency Operation Centre through the toll-free numbers 1070 or 112 (ERSS for Disaster Management), or at 0370-2291120/2291122.
