MOKOKCHUNG — The Gorkha Union Mokokchung marked its golden jubilee at the Town Hall, Mokokchung, on Tuesday, on the theme “Adapt and move forward”.
Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer attended as the special guest, lauding the Gorkha community's role in shaping Mokokchung's trajectory over generations.
Recalling the historic ties between the Gorkha and Ao communities, Longkumer noted how the arrival of Gorkhas brought specialised skills in masonry and carpentry, laying the foundations for the town's infrastructure. Beyond construction, he said Gorkhas inspired excellence in education, sports, music, and arts, while integrating seamlessly into governance structures.
He particularly highlighted the social networks fostered by the Gorkhas, which catalysed urban development across Nagaland, crediting them as true co-pioneers in transforming Mokokchung into the "Land of Pioneers".
In harmony with the nation's ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ ambition, the Speaker painted a vision of a prosperous ‘Viksit Mokokchung 2047’, stating that this goal hinges on inclusive participation from all quarters.

“Dwelling on outdated grievances serves no purpose; we must align our priorities with India's geopolitical realities and the overarching vision of a developed nation,” he asserted, focusing on sustainable advancement for future generations.
“My community cannot realise this alone—Viksit Mokokchung demands collective ideas, support, and resolve to surmount obstacles,” he added, issuing a clarion call to all for collaborative planning.
Acknowledging the Gorkhas' successful integration and peaceful coexistence, Longkumer declared, “Adaptation is already achieved; now, let us propel forward in unison. On this golden jubilee, stride together toward tomorrow.”
He later released the jubilee souvenir and inaugurated the jubilee exhibition.
Guest of Honour, Deputy Commissioner Ajit Kumar Verma, described the jubilee of “India's most patriotic community” in the “Land of Pioneers” as profoundly symbolic. He extolled the Gorkhas' historic and unparalleled contributions to both Mokokchung and the nation.
Urging the youth to perpetuate their elders' legacy in nation-building and inter-community harmony, Verma affirmed that India's resilient democracy thrives on diversity and unity. “A society's true strength lies in the security, comfort, and fabric of its minorities,” he observed.
