DIMAPUR — The 8th edition of the Niathu Sports Festival commenced on Thursday at Zone Niathu by The Park, Chümoukedima. The three-day event, which will conclude on October 11, was officially declared open by the special guest, Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Sharingain Longkumer.
Speaking at the inauguration, Longkumer highlighted the universal importance of sports, noting that it fosters camaraderie and teamwork and shapes both physical fitness and mental strength. He said sports influence attitudes toward life and instil core values such as discipline and cooperation, which are essential for success in any field.
Sharing his perspective on the evolving role of sports in modern life, Longkumer said that in today’s fast-changing global digital era, people are constantly bombarded by social media—a powerful communication tool that also carries a dark side.

He reflected that generations before the digital age, particularly Generation X and earlier, enjoyed simpler and more memorable childhoods, whereas the digital world today burdens people with constant connectivity. Work, social networks, and professional responsibilities follow individuals everywhere, creating a new form of stress and lifestyle-induced health issues.
Longkumer encouraged everyone to remember that any form of physical activity or sport is beneficial. Beyond its traditional role in promoting teamwork, discipline, and fitness, he urged the gathering to see sports as personal time to disconnect from the digital world.
“Take one, two, or even three hours to switch off your phone and dedicate yourselves fully to the sport,” he said, describing it as a positive way to address stress and related health issues.
Delivering the welcome speech, the Director of the Festival, Kechangulie Rio, expressed joy at hosting the 8th edition after a five-year break due to the pandemic.
He said the festival has returned stronger with upgraded facilities and a renewed spirit. Rio stated that the festival is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of the Niathu Group in collaboration with the Niathu Privilege Club, aimed at promoting sports and a healthy lifestyle.
He added that the Niathu Sports Festival is more than just competition—it is a celebration of youth, energy, and community spirit. The goal, he said, is to provide a platform for athletes to showcase their talents, learn from one another, and strengthen unity through sports.
In his closing remarks, Festival Advisor Abu Metha commended the Niathu Group for the initiative, noting that their CSR contribution benefits not only athletes but also the entire state of Nagaland. He remarked that while many businesses and entrepreneurs exist in Nagaland, few step forward with CSR activities that positively impact youth and the community.
Metha emphasised that sport transcends language and dialect, saying its only language is excellence and success. He said it offers young people a platform to pursue their dreams and reach the top, underscoring that there are no shortcuts—only dedication and hard work.
Athletes in the Niathu Sports Festival 2025 are competing in eight sporting disciplines across three venues: Zone Niathu by The Park, Chümoukedima (badminton, futsal, volleyball, wrestling, marathon, and mixed martial arts); The Gym House, 4th Mile (pickleball); and Noune Resort (basketball 3x3).
The Naga Wrestling event was held on Thursday. In the open category, Huluyi D Vadeo emerged as the winner, while Venu Vadeo finished as runner-up. In the below 80 kg category, Seyiejalie Gwirie won the title, and Azhalhou Kire secured the runner-up position.
