  • DIMAPUR — The 19th edition of NI Jamir Academic Excellence Award, organised by the Kohima Ongpangkong Telongjem to felicitate the toppers of the HSLC Examination 2025, was held at Molu Ki, Kohima, on May 24.

  • Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir, the special guest, shared a brief biography of NI Jamir, inspiring students with late Jamir’s humility, thirst for knowledge, and commitment to serve and uplift society.

  • He also called upon the students to prioritise deeds over words, be thankful to their benefactors, and maintain goodwill towards all. Additionally, he called on them to identify and nurture future leaders who could positively impact society and their community.

  • SDO (Civil) Peren, Sentilong Ozukum, who spoke on the theme, ‘Takotet Kaketshir,’ shared a brief history of how American missionaries introduced education to the Ao community.

  • He also highlighted that with the introduction of the gospel, the urge to read and learn the Bible grew, leading to the establishment of the first school in Mokokchung district in 1878, which eventually spread to other villages, a DIPR report stated.

  • Noting Nagaland's third-place ranking in national literacy, he emphasised that knowledge is crucial for progress and educational advancement.

  • According to Ozukum, an educated student has three defining qualities: acknowledging divine guidance, being open to learning new technologies and adapting to changing educational landscapes, and striving to benefit society without selfish motives.

  • On behalf of the awardees, Moasanen Pongener and Ujaren shared their academic journeys, thanking parents, teachers, and well-wishers for their support. They emphasised that being a topper is just a starting point, not the ultimate goal.

  • Short speeches were also delivered by Minister for Rural Development, Metsubo Jamir and Ongpangkong Mungdang president, Alemtoshi Imsong.

  • Earlier, president of Kohima Ongpangkong Telongjem, Kilangchuba, delivered the welcome address and vote of thanks proposed by member of NI Jamir Trust Board of Governors, L Chubaonen Longkumer.

  • Altogether, 23 toppers were awarded cash prizes of INR 10,000 each with certificates, which were given away by the Lok Sabha MP.
