MOKOKCHUNG — Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio virtually inaugurated the Dr. T Ao Trophy Silver Jubilee Monument, marking the 25th edition of the Inter-District Football Championship, at Renpo Lu Sports Complex, Ungma, Mokokchung, on Tuesday.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister described Dr. T Ao as a pioneering figure in Indian football who captained the national team at the 1948 London Olympic Games and carried the Indian flag.
He said Dr. Ao’s life exemplified excellence in sports, professional achievement as a medical doctor, and dedicated public service, reflecting the values of discipline, courage, humility, perseverance and commitment.
Rio noted that naming the championship after Dr. T Ao honours his sporting legacy and reaffirms the state’s commitment to the ideals he represented, fostering excellence both on and off the field. He said the Dr. T Ao Trophy has grown into an important sporting institution in Nagaland over the years.
The 25th edition has brought together footballers from various districts, providing a platform for emerging talent while strengthening bonds of friendship and unity among communities, he said.

He observed that the trophy has built lasting friendships and reinforced a collective identity across Nagaland.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to sports, Rio stated that the Government of Nagaland recognises sports as a force for building confidence, fostering discipline and developing leadership.
He assured that the government would continue to strengthen grassroots sports, improve opportunities for training and competition, identify promising talent and encourage young athletes.
The continued growth of the Dr. T Ao Trophy, he stated, forms an important part of these broader aspirations for sports development in the state.
The chief minister described the unveiling of the Jubilee Monument as a tribute to the championship’s journey and a lasting marker of history, identity and collective achievement.
He said the monument would serve as a permanent reminder of the 25th edition and Dr. T Ao’s enduring legacy, inspiring young people to pursue excellence in football and other fields.
Rio encouraged participants to compete with determination, uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship and remember that true success lies in character, discipline and integrity rather than merely in winning.
He also expressed appreciation to the organisers, officials, coaches, volunteers, supporters and the people of Tuma for hosting the event and contributing to the growth of football in the state.
