NEC releases INR 59 crore for Nagaland roads, tourism, skills, rural infrastructure and community development projects during May-June 2026
DIMAPUR — The North Eastern Council (NEC) released more than INR 58.96 crore for development projects in Nagaland during May and June 2026, with the bulk of the funding earmarked for road connectivity under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS), alongside investments in tourism, rural development, skill training and community infrastructure.
According to a DIPR update, INR 48.02 crore was released under NESIDS (Roads) for seven key road projects aimed at improving connectivity within the state and with neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.
The projects include the upgrading of the road from Thizema via the Kohima bypass to the proposed Chiethu Airport through Nehre Model Village; the Phomching–Longding road linking Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh; the Coco Road–Ghukiye Junction route; the Old Peren–New Peren road via Chalkot Junction; the Jalukie–New Deputy Commissioner's Office Complex road in Peren; the Tuensang–Longleng road; and the Khonoma–NH-29 road via Tzudza River.
It stated that the projects are intended to improve access to remote areas, strengthen inter-district and interstate connectivity, support economic activities and facilitate access to essential services.

Apart from roads, the NEC also released funds under the Scheme of NEC (SoNEC) for community infrastructure and skill development projects. These include a Skill Development Centre-cum-Garo Community Centre in Dimapur, a Rongmei Multi-Purpose Complex in Jalukie and a Tribal Artisans Resource Centre in Chümoukedima.
The council also released the first instalment for an Integrated Development Project in the “backward areas of Phomching Assembly constituency” in Mon district, it stated. The project has an approved cost of INR 6.26 crore.
Other funding during the two-month period covered tourism, coffee processing, trade infrastructure, technical education and public amenities.
The NEC also announced the completion of the 9.6-km Glory Peak Tourist Road in Phek district. Built at a cost of INR 32.50 crore, the road improves access to tourist destinations including Glory Peak, Kapamodzu Forest and Japan Cave.
In addition, the council released INR 18.93 crore to regional institutions, including universities, technical institutes, NGOs and societies, for projects promoting development across the Northeast.
Nagaland was among the major beneficiaries through initiatives such as a state-level workshop on community-based eco-tourism organised by NEPED, a physics research study by Nagaland University and a PM Gati Shakti geospatial capacity-building programme conducted by the Nagaland GIS and Remote Sensing Centre in Kohima, it added.
