- MOKOKCHUNG — With an objective to empower youth and
entrepreneurs with sustainable agricultural practices, the agri and allied
organisation of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), Mokokchung
region, conducted a one-day training and workshop on integrated farming at its
office in Mokokchung town on May 15.
- Speaking at the programme, Mangyang Jamir, president of NDPP
Mokokchung region, urged the participants to embrace agriculture as a viable
and sustainable profession. He called for establishment of agri and allied unit
in all ten assembly constituencies within the region, underscoring the
organisation’s pivotal role in promoting agricultural development.

- In the technical session, Lanuchuba Imchen, inspector at the
district agriculture office (DAO), Mokokchung, provided an in-depth overview of
integrated farming systems (IFS). He described IFS as a scientifically
structured model that optimises land, labour and capital by integrating crops,
livestock, fishery, poultry, horticulture and agroforestry.
- He outlined its core principles such as recycling farm and
animal waste for circular resource use, diversifying enterprises to reduce risk
and boost income, minimising chemical use for environmental sustainability and
maximising yields while conserving soil and water.
- Besides, Imchen also highlighted IFS objectives including
enhanced profitability, food security and reduced environmental degradation.
- In the second session, Recha Imchen, assistant horticulture
officer, Mokokchung, presented on the cultivation of Pleurotus (oyster)
mushrooms, describing it as a low-cost, high-yield venture ideal for the
region.
- Using agricultural waste as a substrate, he detailed the
cultivation process for species like P ostreatus and P florida, emphasising
their economic viability. He also introduced Shiitake mushroom cultivation, a
medicinal variety grown on tree logs, noting Nagaland’s favorable climate and
abundant tree species like quercus and castanopsis as advantages. He covered
post-harvest management and its potential for local farmers.
- The workshop was attended by youth, farmers and party
members.
- A party worker commented that the training underscored
NDPP’s commitment to fostering sustainable agriculture and economic growth in
Mokokchung, aligning with broader state efforts to modernise farming practices.
