National Fish Farmer's Day observed in Pungro

DIMAPUR — The Fishery Union Pungro Sub-division (FUPSD), together with the District Fishery Office (DFO) Kiphire, District Horticulture Office (DHO) Kiphire, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Office, Pungro, and the Sub-division Agriculture Department Office, Pungro, organised a National Fish Farmer's Day-cum-integrated farming systems event in Pungro town on July 10.

Nzanthung T Yanthan, DFO Kiphire; Senti Longchar, DHO Kiphire; Omega, inspector SDAO office, Pungro; and Yochong, senior VFA, Pungro, attended the function as resource persons, according to a press release.

The event promoted integrated farming systems (IFS), combining crop production with livestock farming and aquaculture to enhance productivity and livelihoods. Experts from various departments also spoke about modern agricultural techniques, soil health management, and water conservation.

The event fostered partnerships among stakeholders, including government departments, fish farmers, and agricultural experts.

The day is celebrated in tribute and honour of pioneers Dr. Hiralal Chaudhury and Dr. K H Alikunhi, who pioneered induced breeding of major carps in India. The celebration highlights the importance of sustainable practices in aquaculture, contributing to the Indian Blue Economy vision. It also recognises the vital role of fish farmers in India’s food security, employment opportunities, and economic growth.

The programme was chaired by H Hanso, general secretary of FUPSD, with the keynote address delivered by Azikiu Abraham, president of FUPSD.
