DIMAPUR — National Dengue Day was observed in the Phek and Longleng districts on Saturday to raise public awareness about the prevention and control of dengue fever prior to the monsoon season.
Phek: In Phek, the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) conducted an awareness programme, miking, and a sensitisation drive. The awareness programme was held at the Chief Medical Officer's (CMO) conference hall.
According to an update, Dr. Rebecca Y Sema, District Vector Borne Officer, in her keynote address, briefed the gathering on why National Dengue Day is observed across the nation.
An awareness talk on dengue was delivered by Khrusayi Khamo, the malaria consultant for Phek. He shared the signs, symptoms, preventive measures, and control mechanisms for dengue fever. He also informed that miking will be carried out across the district.
A mass sanitation drive was conducted in all the wards of Meluri. The awareness programme was attended by malaria programme staff from all the blocks.
Longleng: In Longleng, the District Health Society, on the initiative of the NVBDCP Longleng, observed the day on the theme “Community participation in dengue control: Check, clean and cover” under the guidance of the NVBDCP, Directorate of Health and Family Welfare.
Various activities were carried out across the district in all health units, including the district hospital, health and wellness centres, and sub-centres.

Participation was seen in cleanliness and sanitation drives in and around health institutions, colonies, and public areas to eliminate mosquito breeding sites such as stagnant water containers and waste materials.
Awareness programmes on dengue prevention and control were also conducted in schools and communities by health workers and NVBDCP staff.
Students and community members were educated on the signs and symptoms of dengue, source reduction, maintaining cleanliness, and the importance of personal protective measures such as the use of mosquito nets, wearing full-sleeve clothing, and keeping surroundings clean.
Information, education, and communication activities included the distribution of leaflets to promote public participation in vector control activities.
The district health team appealed to the public to remain vigilant and actively participate in preventing mosquito breeding.
