Nagaland University hosts conference on Bharatiya Bhasha Parivar exploring linguistic diversity, policy and endangered languages.

DIMAPUR — A one-day national conference on “Bharatiya Bhasha Parivar”, sponsored by Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, Ministry of Education, was organised at Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, on December 10.
Apart from the keynote address by Ramesh Chand Sharma, retired professor of Linguistics, University of Delhi, and deliberations of six resource persons, thirty papers were presented in two parallel sessions, stated an update.
Prof. Jagadish K Patnaik, vice chancellor, Nagaland University, was the chief guest at the inaugural session, and Prof. N Venuh, pro vice chancellor, Kohima Campus, was the guest of honour who highlighted the multilingual scenario and cultural diversity of India.
Two volumes of books on Bharatiya Bhasha Parivar published by National Book Trust of India were released at the inaugural session by Prof. N Venuh and Prof. Ramesh Chand Sharma.

About 104 participants registered and participated in the conference. Prof. Ajit Kumar Baishya, Dean, Rabindranath Tagore School of Indian Languages and Cultural Studies, Assam University, Silchar; Prof. Pangersenla Walling, HoD, Department of Linguistics; Dr. Mimi K Ezung, HoD, Department of Tenyidie; Prof. Rabi Ranjan Kumar, Department of Hindi; Dr. Imlienla Imsong and Dr. Bijen Kumar Singh, Centre for Naga Tribal Languages, Nagaland University, were the resource persons.
Scholars and teachers from the departments of English, Hindi, Linguistics, Tenyidie and the Centre for Naga Tribal Language Studies and affiliated colleges of Nagaland University participated and presented their papers.
In the inaugural session, Prof. MAJ Khan, HoD, English, delivered the welcome address, and Prof. Nigamananda Das, local coordinator, delivered the concept note and explained the objective of the conference. Dr. Subhashis Banerjee, also a local coordinator, gave the vote of thanks in the valedictory session.
The resource persons and participants deliberated on the features of different Naga and Northeast Indian languages, the language policy of India, the future of language, the role of mother tongue in NEP 2020, the necessity of multilingualism and issues of the endangered languages.
