Nagaland University begins a five-day poultry production training programme to boost skills and entrepreneurship in Nagaland.

DIMAPUR — The inaugural programme of the hands-on training on poultry production technology was held at the Department of Agricultural Extension, School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus on June 1.
The programme was organised by the Farmers’ Cell, in collaboration with the Department of Livestock Production and Management, SAS, NU, an update stated.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dipak Sinha, Pro Vice-Chancellor, NU Medziphema Campus, highlighted the immense potential of livestock and poultry sector in Nagaland.
He pointed out that despite the state's high demand for meat and animal-based products, Nagaland continues to depend significantly on imports from outside the state due to production deficits.
Sinha encouraged the participants to view poultry farming not merely as a traditional activity but as a viable enterprise capable of generating income, employment and rural development.
He further stressed the importance of skill-based training and entrepreneurship in achieving greater self-reliance in the agricultural sector.

Introducing the training programme, Prof. Catherine Rutsa, Head, Department of Livestock Production and Management, highlighted the growing importance of scientific poultry production.
She stated that the training would focus primarily on practical, hands-on learning rather than theory, enabling participants to acquire skills that can be readily applied in poultry enterprises.
Delivering a brief remark, Prof. L Tongpang Longkumer, Professor-in-charge, Extension Cell, stated that the Farmers’ Cell, established in 2005, has consistently organised need-based programmes for farmers and rural stakeholders.
He remarked that poultry production training is the need of the hour, considering the increasing demand for poultry products and the opportunities available for livelihood enhancement and entrepreneurship among rural youth.
Prof. J Longkumer, Dept. of Agricultural Extension Education expressed optimism about the future of agriculture and allied sectors, noting that the participants were young, educated, and highly motivated.
She remarked that the growing involvement of educated youth in agriculture is a positive sign for the sector and also stressed the importance of financial literacy for building successful and sustainable farm enterprises.
“A total of 12 participants from different parts of Nagaland enrolled in the training programme. The participants displayed great enthusiasm and determination to acquire practical skills and knowledge that would help them establish or strengthen poultry-based enterprises in their respective areas,” the update stated.
Dr. Mary N Odyuo, Associate Professor and Farmers’ Cell In-charge, who chaired the programme, acknowledged the support of the university authorities, the collaborating department and the Farmers’ Cell members for making the training programme possible.
The five-day training programme will continue until June 5, featuring intensive practical sessions on poultry housing, brooding and chick management, feeding practices, health care, disease prevention, vaccination, record keeping and enterprise management.
The programme aims to enhance the technical and entrepreneurial capacities of aspiring poultry farmers and agri-entrepreneurs in the state.
