Nagaland University Kohima Campus organises workshop on Paleogene sedimentary records of Northeast India.

DIMAPUR — A two-day regional workshop titled “Paleogene sedimentary records of Northeast India” was organised by the Department of Geology, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema, on March 9 and 10th, bringing together teachers, scientists and research scholars to deliberate on sedimentology, palaeontology, palynology and related fields for reconstructing depositional environments and palaeoclimate.
Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, Prof. JK Patnaik, attended the inaugural programme as the chief guest and emphasised the importance of organising such academic events to disseminate recent research and developments in earth sciences, particularly in the North-eastern region.
He also encouraged faculty members to conduct more such workshops in the future, an update from the university stated.
The workshop featured seven technical lectures delivered by resource persons from various institutions.

On the first day, Prof. (Retd.) GT Thong of Nagaland University presented a lecture on the provenance of the Upper Disang sandstones based on petrographic and geochemical evidence.
Prof. Jayanta Jivan Laskar of Gauhati University discussed recent fluvial sedimentation in the intermontane basins of the Brahmaputra Valley, while Prof. SK Srivastava of Nagaland University spoke on the role of trace fossils in understanding depositional environments and palaeoclimate.
On the second day, Prof. BP Singh from Banaras Hindu University presented on lithofacies analysis of the western Himalayan foreland basin and its correlation with the Assam foreland basin.
Dr. Gaurav Srivastava of Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, Lucknow, spoke on the use of fossil leaves to reconstruct ancient climates.
Prof. Y Raghumani Singh of Manipur University highlighted the relationship between palynofacies and depositional environments in Meghalaya, while Dr. Temsulemba Walling of Nagaland University delivered the final lecture on hydrocarbons in Palaeogene sediments of Mokokchung district.
Earlier, the inaugural session began with a welcome address by Prof. Vikoleno Rino, head of the Department of Geology and chairperson of the workshop, who also presented a brief profile of the department.
Dr. A Patra, coordinator of the workshop, outlined the theme and objectives of the event. The session was chaired by Dr. Ch. Mangi Khuman, assistant professor in the department, while Prof. SK Srivastava proposed the vote of thanks.
At the valedictory function, Dean of the School of Sciences, Prof. SK Singh, encouraged participants to apply the knowledge and experience gained from the workshop in their future research.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Kenisazo Nagi of the Department of Geology.
