Nagaland Legal Metrology Department directs traders and dealers to use verified weighing instruments, comply with packaged commodity declarations and face penalties for violations.
DIMAPUR — The Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Nagaland, has directed all traders, dealers, retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers, packers and other persons engaged in trade and commerce to strictly comply with the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, and applicable rules.
In a notification issued for information and strict compliance, the department directed all concerned to ensure that weights, measures and other instruments used in commercial transactions are duly verified and stamped within the prescribed period.
The department prohibited the use of unverified, unstamped, defective, unclean, loam-stuck or non-standard weighing and measuring instruments in trade and commercial transactions.
It further directed traders to conduct transactions involving goods sold by weight, measure or number using prescribed standard units and duly verified instruments.
The notification also instructed traders and dealers to ensure that all pre-packaged commodities comply with the mandatory declarations and requirements under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
These include declarations relating to net quantity, maximum retail price (MRP), and the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or importer, among other applicable particulars.

Traders and dealers have also been directed to maintain and produce relevant licences, certificates, verification certificates, records and other documents as required under the applicable laws and rules.
The department cautioned against practices resulting in short delivery, incorrect weighing or measurement, or any other contravention of legal metrology laws.
It directed all concerned to comply with the provisions with immediate effect.
Legal Metrology officers will conduct inspections and enforcement activities across the state to ensure compliance.
Violations detected during inspections will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, and other applicable laws and rules, including penalties and proceedings.
The department advised all traders and dealers to ensure full compliance and cooperate with officials during inspection and enforcement activities.
