Nagaland Rhododendron Society seeks Governor Nand Kishore Yadav’s support for rhododendron conservation and a centre at Jakhama.

DIMAPUR — The Nagaland Rhododendron Society (NRS) has sought the support of Governor Nand Kishore Yadav for strengthening rhododendron conservation initiatives in the state, including the proposed establishment of a Jakhama Rhododendron Conservation Centre.
During a meeting with the Governor, the NRS delegation highlighted the need for a state-level conservation initiative to protect rhododendrons and their natural habitats from threats such as forest fires, habitat degradation and other environmental disturbances, the society stated in a press release.
The proposed Jakhama Rhododendron Conservation Centre is envisioned as a hub for conservation, research, documentation, environmental education and eco-tourism. Located between Kisama and the Dzükou Valley, the centre could also promote biodiversity conservation and nature-based tourism in Nagaland.
The delegation apprised the Governor of the society’s ongoing conservation efforts at Jakhama, including rescuing and nurturing saplings, plantation activities and engaging local communities and youth in environmental protection.

The society also expressed its commitment to collaborating with the government, local communities, educational institutions and other stakeholders to advance rhododendron conservation and environmental awareness across the state.
The NRS traces its origins to a family initiative in 2017, when a few rhododendron saplings were conserved. The effort later led to the formation of the society, which aims to promote community-based conservation and protect Nagaland’s biodiversity.
The meeting was part of the society’s efforts to expand its conservation work and build wider support for protecting the state’s natural heritage.
The society continues to promote its guiding message, “Save the Rhododendron, Save Our Mountains.”
