KOHIMA — Advisor for School Education and SCERT, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, on Monday said that the government is proposing to sign Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between government schools to create a feeder-school system, which will provide avenues for students from government middle schools to progress to government high and higher secondary schools.

He was speaking during the inauguration of the new school building of PM Shri Government Middle School (GMS), L Khel, Kohima Village.

Yhome said the reason for signing MoUs is to increase the enrolment of students in government primary and middle schools, noting that the government higher secondary schools in the state are performing well.

Although PM Shri GMS L Khel was established in 1958, he observed that the school’s growth had been limited because parents were not sending their children to government schools. He therefore encouraged parents to enrol their children in government institutions.

He further opined that among the government middle schools in Kohima, GMS L Khel has the most potential to become a full-fledged high school.

The advisor informed that the school currently has 24 staff members, maintaining a ratio of one teacher for every five students. He urged teachers to reach out to the community and share the benefits of government education to help increase enrolment.

Yhome also stated that the government plans to introduce 21st-century skills and new textbooks that will include lessons on the Inner Line Permit (ILP), Article 371(A), and the history of the Nagas, instead of “history which is irrelevant to us.” He added that “a lot of reformation will take place though it might take some time.”

Chairman of Lhisemia Council, Ayie Yhome, thanked the advisor, the building committee, and the community for their support in completing the new school building. He expressed hope that “with the new building, a new set of mind from the teachers and students will sprout up to push forward,” and requested the advisor and the School Education department to consider upgrading the school to a high school soon.

Director of School Education, Razouseyi Vese, in his address, emphasised the importance of a strong education ecosystem built on four pillars — department officials, community leaders, teachers, and students. He urged students to “seize the privilege and opportunities and try to become a good human being.” He also noted that “now we have good teachers placed in schools, so we have to keep going with the aim the pioneers have set.”

Building completed in eight months

Neingusalie Khruomo, treasurer of the building committee, reported that the new school building site consisted of three stepped plots, which made it inaccessible to machinery. As a result, it took three months to complete the levelling work.

Construction work began in January this year but was halted for two months due to a delay in the release of funds. The building was completed in eight months.

Khruomo informed that the total expenditure for the project was INR 79,20,600. So far, the school has received two instalments amounting to INR 31.81 lakh from Samagra Shiksha, INR 10 lakh for classroom extension, and INR 5.14 lakh from community contributions generated during a sales day on July 29, 2025 — totalling INR 52 lakh. He requested the government for the early release of the remaining funds so that the committee can clear pending dues.

Head teacher of GMS L Khel, Keneingu Rutsa, shared that the school began as a primary school in 1958 and was later named TM School. After TM shifted to a new location at Kruoliezou, it continued as a government primary school and was upgraded to a middle school in 1997. Last year, it was renamed PM Shri Government Middle School.
