Nagaland marked International Day of Older Persons with 25 years of Senior Citizens' Association, honouring elders’ role in society.

DIMAPUR — The International Day of Older Persons 2025 was observed across districts of Nagaland on October 1. The commemoration also marked the 25th anniversary of the Senior Citizens' Association of Nagaland on the theme "Older persons driving local and global action: our aspirations, our well-being, our right”.
At the state-level programme held at the Capital Convention Centre, Kohima, Advisor for Social Welfare Wangpang Konyak, addressing the gathering, stated that the day served not only as a celebration but as a reminder of the invaluable roles played by elders in Naga society.
According to a DIPR report, referring to the theme, he said it resonated with the spirit of Nagaland since senior citizens are the pillars of culture, carrying rich traditions, stories and wisdom of the tribes. He urged them to continue sharing their vision, experiences and stories, which would guide and inspire younger generations.
Wangpang further noted that well-being is critical and reassured that the government is committed to providing better support systems, improved medical facilities through the Chief Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme (CMHIS), and social assistance schemes.
He emphasised that the rights of senior citizens must be safeguarded in a society that value respect for elders, ensuring fair treatment. He added that Nagaland’s resilience and traditions could serve as a model on the global stage, and marking 25 years of the Senior Citizens' Association provided an occasion to reflect on achievements and future goals for empowering senior citizens.

Secretary of Social Welfare, Limawabang Jamir, in his keynote address, said the occasion highlighted the role of older individuals in shaping the world.
He pointed out that the day was not only about recognising challenges faced by elders but also celebrating their contributions.
He stressed the importance of raising awareness about their issues and promoting their rights. He informed that the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, has supported the establishment of 12 senior citizens' homes across Nagaland. He added that schemes like Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY), which include cataract surgeries and geriatric caregiver training, along with financial assistance through the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension (IGNOAP) scheme, are aimed at improving the quality of life of the elderly.
During the programme, the ‘Distinguished Senior Citizen Award’ was presented to Neidonuo Angami and Rev. Dr. L Anjo Keikung for their contributions to society and the state. The jubilee souvenir of the Senior Citizens' Association of Nagaland was also released.
In Wokha, the day was observed at VDB Hall, with Extra Assistant Commissioner Sangmou Khiamniungan attending as special guest.
He said that senior citizens have played transformative roles through sacrifices that paved the way for younger generations. He noted their contributions in bridging development and emphasised their role in addressing social concerns like drug and alcohol addiction.
Vice Principal of Mt. Tiyi College, Dr. Khyopenthung Tsopoe, spoke on the theme, describing elders as bearers of wisdom and knowledge who continue to contribute to societal growth.
District awards were presented to Rev. M Wosumo Humtsoe and Anymro Lotha. The history and objectives of the Senior Citizens Association Wokha were shared by O Orhyumomo Lotha.
The Chief Medical Officer’s (CMN) Office Wokha also marked the day with a separate event at its conference hall.
District Programme Officer (NCD), Dr. Aseno Rhetso, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the prevalence of hypertension and diabetes among the elderly and stressing regular medication to avoid serious health risks.
She informed that under the National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly, screenings and awareness drives would be conducted throughout October.
CMO Dr. Thungchanbemo Ezung urged health workers and community leaders to actively mobilise for elderly care service delivery. The programme also saw the formal launch of International Day of Older Persons at Urban Primary Health Centre, Wokha, in the presence of medical officials and participants.
In Shamator, the Social Welfare Department observed the International Day of Older Persons for the first time at the Cultural Hall. District Programme Officer Renchano Odyuo delivered the welcome and keynote address.
The Distinguished Senior Citizen Award was presented to Rev. A Thrunso Yimchunger and T Youngkila Yimchunger for their contributions to the district and society.
The theme speaker, Mekato J Aye, expressed gratitude to the department for organising the programme and thanked the senior citizens of Shamator for their responsible contributions to building the town through their wisdom.
In Chümoukedima, the Department of Social Welfare observed the day at AWTC Training Hall, Diphupar.
Awards were presented to I Anglong Phom and Kekhrongulou Kapfo for their distinguished contributions to society. The significance of the day was briefed by Kevineinuo Rio, DPO, Chümoukedima.
Short speeches were delivered by the chairman of Diphupar Village Council, Ghuzui Shohe, and Dr. Ihishelo Tsuhah, DPO-NCD, CMO Office, Dimapur. Speeches were also delivered by the awardees.
A total of 45 senior citizens from various communities attended the programme.
In Dimapur, the day was observed at Purana Bazar Sumi Council Hall and awards were presented to Rev. Dr. Ezamo Murry and Viholi Sema for their distinguished contributions to society.
The significance of the day was briefed by Keneikesangulie Zumu, DPO, Dimapur.
Speeches were delivered by the awardees, and a total of 60 senior citizens from various communities attended the programme.
