KOHIMA — The two-day 1st Nagaland Masters Table Tennis Championship 2025, organised by the Nagaland Table Tennis Association (NTTA), got underway on Friday at the TT Stadium, Kohima.
Altogether 44 players, both men and women, from Mon, Kohima, Mokokchung, Dimapur, Kiphire, Peren and Meluri are participating in the tournament.
Speaking at the opening ceremony as the special guest, Kevithuto Sophie, IGP (Armed Bn. IR) and IGP (VG), commended the NTTA for its initiative. While observing that Nagas are sports lovers but often “seasonal players,” he urged veteran athletes to nurture young talents and help them progress to national and international platforms.

Sophie noted that sports infrastructure in the state remains below standard, though the government is making efforts to improve the sector. He also pointed out the absence of sports academies and trained instructors in Nagaland, and called for stepping up efforts similar to neighbouring states.
The officer also touched upon unemployment, remarking that many educated youth are reluctant to take up daily-wage jobs or entrepreneurial ventures, while waiting for government employment. He encouraged them to return to farming rather than depending solely on government posts, adding that “Nagas want easy money and that too in big chunks.”
Dr. Khriezotuo Paphino, convenor of the organising committee, said the championship is not just a competition but a celebration that fosters friendship, showcases talent, and rekindles passion for the game, while motivating younger generations. He added that participation in the women’s 40+ singles category was low this year.
The championship features multiple categories, including: 40+ men’s team event, 50+ men’s team event, 60+ men’s singles, 40+ women’s singles, 40+ men’s doubles, 40+ men’s singles, 50+ men’s doubles, 50+ men’s singles
The closing programme on Saturday will be graced by Kovi Meyase, Secretary of Excise and team leader of NEPED, Nagaland, as guest of honour.
