KOHIMA — A fresh proposal for the creation of 129 posts of assistant professor under the Higher Education Department has been submitted to the Manpower Rationalisation Committee (MRC) on July 2, 2025, for its recommendation.
According to a letter issued by the Department of Higher and Technical Education to the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) President on July 11, the proposal was submitted “after obtaining due clearance and concurrence from both the Finance Department and the Personnel and Administrative Reforms (P&AR) Department.”
It may be recalled that the High-Powered Committee (HPC) constituted by the state cabinet earlier in April this year to examine the absorption of 147 assistant professors and librarians had completed and submitted its report to the government in June. The HPC had reportedly recommended the creation of 129 assistant professor posts. The proposal is currently under consideration with the MRC, headed by the State Chief Secretary, which will examine the matter and place it before the cabinet for approval.
The department’s letter also mentioned that with the revocation of the earlier absorption order by the State Cabinet on April 21, 2025, the posts previously created stand null and void. Consequently, the department submitted the new proposal for the creation of 129 posts for consideration.

Further, the department informed that 34 posts of assistant professor under the Higher Education Department have already been sent to the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) for direct recruitment. This pertains to the matter of the 147 contractual assistant professors and librarians.
“With regard to the requisition of posts to the NPSC, this Office would like to bring to your kind information that a total of 34 (thirty-four) posts of Assistant Professor have been requisitioned to the NPSC for direct recruitment vide this office letter No. HTE/HE/8-160/2020 dated 2/7/2025 (copy enclosed),” the department stated.
These 34 assistant professor posts requisitioned to the NPSC were categorised into three groups — 25 posts (11 in humanities and commerce, and 14 in science); eight posts (seven in humanities and commerce, and one in commerce); and one post in science. All the 34 posts fall under the Higher Education Department.
