Nagaland government schools outperform private schools in Commerce, while private schools lead Arts and Science in five-year HSSLC comparison
KOHIMA — Government higher secondary schools (GHSS) in Nagaland have performed better than private schools in Commerce stream, while private schools have recorded higher pass percentages in Arts and Science, according to a five-year comparative analysis.
The statistical report, titled Government Higher Secondary Schools in Nagaland and Academic Performance in the HSSLC Examinations, was prepared by the Nagaland Government Higher Secondary School Employees Association (NGHSSEA) and launched by Advisor of School Education, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, during the association’s general conference in Kohima on August 22.
The association compared the performance of government and private schools in the HSSLC examinations over five years, based on Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) results from 2022 to 2026.
Nagaland currently has 57 government higher secondary schools, of which 56 offer Arts, 16 offer Science and five offer Commerce.
In the 2026 HSSLC examination, government schools recorded an overall pass percentage of 82.04% in Arts, 88.97% in Commerce and 84.93% in Science.
Private schools, meanwhile, recorded 90.13% in Arts, 81.87% in Commerce and 87.36% in Science.
Thus, government schools outperformed private schools in Commerce in 2026, while private schools recorded higher pass percentages in Arts and Science.

The five-year comparison showed that government schools also outperformed private schools in Commerce in four of the five years covered by the report. In 2024, government schools recorded a pass percentage of 91.43%, compared with 89.38% for private schools; in 2023, 90.98% against 88.82%; and in 2022, 87.50% against 87.02%. However, in 2025, private schools recorded a higher pass percentage of 84.01%, compared with 78.26% for government schools.
In Arts, private schools consistently recorded higher pass percentages over the five-year period. Their pass percentage stood at 90.13% in 2026, 88.60% in 2025, 87.48% in 2024, 89.70% in 2023 and 88.70% in 2022.
Government schools recorded 82.04% in 2026, 79.78% in 2025, 80.79% in 2024, 84.21% in 2023 and 81.39% in 2022.
Private schools also outperformed government schools in Science in each of the five years. In 2026, private schools recorded an 87.36% pass percentage against 84.93% for government schools. The corresponding figures were 78.86% and 72.75% in 2025; 84.23% and 70.53% in 2024; 91.36% and 85.77% in 2023; and 92% and 87.64% in 2022.
Three government higher secondary schools—GHSS Jotsoma, PM Shri GHSS Thanjam in Tuensang and TM GHSS Kohima—recorded a 100% pass percentage in the 2026 HSSLC examination.
