MoRTH report details National Highways expansion and key infrastructure projects in Nagaland and North-East region.

Akegwo–Avangkhu highway project set for 2026 completion
DIMAPUR — National Highways with a total length of 16,207 km in the North-East are being developed and maintained by four agencies—the state PWDs, BRO, NHAI and NHIDCL.
Of the total length of 16,207 km, about 6,836 km is with NHIDCL, 7,069 km with respective state governments, 778 km with NHAI and 1,228 km with BRO, while 296 km is yet to be entrusted.
This was stated in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) annual report for 2025–2026 published recently.
The Ministry maintained that it has been paying special attention to the development of National Highways in the North-Eastern Region and 10 percent of the total budget allocation is earmarked for the NE region.
Works under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), approved as recommended by the concerned state governments in accordance with the CRIF Act, 2000 and its amendments, are being implemented under two schemes: CRIF (state road) and CRIF (Setu Bandhan).

Under the CRIF state road scheme, 157 works amounting to INR 3,600 crore are in progress. Under the CRIF-Setu Bandhan scheme, 35 works amounting to INR 590 crore are in progress.
Under the Economic Importance and Inter State Connectivity scheme, which has been subsumed under the CRIF scheme since 2020, four projects sanctioned before 2020 amounting to INR 242 crore are in progress.
For NHAI, two works covering a length of 161 km and costing INR 3,110 crore are in progress. For NHIDCL, 140 works covering a length of 2,954 km and costing INR 80,541 crore under various schemes are in progress.
For Nagaland, under the state PWD, as on December 31, 2025, four development works covering a length of 50 km and costing INR 555 crore are in progress.
Under CRIF, four works costing INR 179 crore are in progress for the improvement of state roads.
Under CRIF-SetuBandhan, five works costing INR 23 crore are in progress for the construction of bridges, while four works costing INR 242 crore are in progress under the Economic Importance and Inter State Connectivity (EI and ISC) scheme.
Under NHIDCL, as on December 31, 2025, 17 development works covering a length of 315 km and costing INR 5,406 crore are in progress.
It was also stated that in the total projects awarded from April 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025, out of the 17 projects awarded under NHIDCL, Nagaland received the second highest number of projects after Assam, with four projects covering 15 km in length at a cost of INR 136 crore.
The report stated that detailed feasibility study is underway for projects at Kamakhya Temple in Assam and Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.
Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) have been signed with the state governments of Assam, Tripura, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh for implementation of ropeway projects under Parvatmala Pariyojana in coordination with state governments.
According to the report, as per the statement showing the state-wise disbursement of national permit fee from April 2025 to December 2025, Nagaland reported INR 1,58,86,220.
For the state-wise distribution of All India Tourist Permit from April 2025 to December 2025, Nagaland reported INR 18,70,082.
The report also stated that the widening to 2-laning of Akegwo to Avangkhu section of NH1-202K by NHIDCL will connect other parts of NER through Nagaland with Myanmar.
The project road would be open to the public by March, 2026, it reported.
However, as per the project status updated by NHIDCL, the physical progress for Package-II made so far is 49% with a financial progress of 41%. For Package III, the physical progress made is at 85% and financial progress at 84%, while for Package I, physical progress is at 85% and financial progress is at 81%.
The original scheduled completion date was February 23, 2026, but the project is likely to be completed by June and July, 2026.
