Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer leads an NLA delegation at the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Cape Town.
DIMAPUR — A delegation from the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), led by Speaker Sharingain Longkumer, is participating in the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) being held in Cape Town, South Africa, from September 13 to the 19th.
The delegation comprises NLA Speaker Sharingain Longkumer and his spouse, Deputy Speaker S Toiho Yeptho and his spouse, and Assembly Secretary Khruohituonuo Rio, according to a press release issued by the Secretary, Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
The conference, hosted by the Parliament of South Africa and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) South Africa Branch, is being held on the theme, “Strengthening International Law and Parliamentary Democracy in a Changing World Order: Commonwealth Leadership.”
The 69th CPC brings together speakers, presiding officers, parliamentarians, parliamentary officials and other stakeholders from across the Commonwealth to deliberate on contemporary challenges facing parliamentary democracy, governance and international cooperation.
Sharingain Longkumer participated in Workshop C on “Parliamentary Leadership in Promoting Climate Adaptation and Resilience.”
The workshop focused on the need for parliaments and parliamentarians to strengthen climate adaptation measures, improve resilience, and exercise effective legislative and oversight roles in responding to the increasing impacts of climate change.
Deputy Speaker S Toiho Yeptho participated in Workshop E on “Protecting Human Rights and Promoting Peace: The Role of Parliaments.”
Assembly Secretary Khruohituonuo Rio participated in the 60th meeting of the Society of Clerks-at-the-Table (SoCATT), held on the margins of the 69th CPC.
The forum provides an avenue for parliamentary officials to exchange experiences and strengthen the institutional capacity and effectiveness of parliamentary secretariats, the release stated.
The participation of the NLA Secretary in the SoCATT meeting also provided an opportunity to engage with parliamentary officials from other Commonwealth jurisdictions and gain insights into emerging practices and innovations in legislative and parliamentary administration.
The 69th CPC is being attended by delegates representing the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, which comprises nearly 180 national, state, provincial and territorial parliaments and legislatures.
The NLA delegation's participation, according to the release, reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening parliamentary democracy, promoting responsible and responsive governance, and learning from the experiences and best practices of other Commonwealth legislatures.
