KOHIMA — In light of the ongoing heatwave affecting several parts of Nagaland, particularly the plains, the Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) has issued a directive to all registered schools to implement precautionary measures to safeguard the health and well-being of students and staff.

The advisory was issued by Rangumbuing Nsarangbe, Secretary and Chairperson (additional charge) of NBSE, through a notification dated June 16. The directive comes amid growing concerns over the impact of the hot weather conditions on school-going children and educators.

Among the measures outlined, schools have been instructed to ensure that classrooms are properly ventilated and equipped with functional fans. In case of power outages, schools have been advised to arrange for backup power supply or alternative cooling arrangements.

The NBSE has also asked schools to make clean and cool drinking water available at multiple, easily accessible locations within school premises throughout the day.

To minimise heat exposure, schools have been encouraged to conduct morning assemblies indoors or opt for classroom announcements.

Heads of institutions have been directed to remain vigilant during breaks and recess, monitoring students for symptoms of heat stress or exhaustion. Immediate medical attention must be provided to any student displaying signs of discomfort or illness due to heat, it said.

The circular further suggested that schools may consider relaxing uniform requirements temporarily to help students stay cool. Teachers have also been urged to educate students on the importance of hydration, avoiding physical exertion in direct sunlight, and recognising early signs of heat-related ailments.

All registered schools under NBSE have been directed to comply with these precautionary steps until further notice.
