DIMAPUR — The BJP Mahila Morcha, Nagaland, staged a protest on Monday opposite Congress Bhavan, Dimapur, condemning the alleged derogatory remarks made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother Heeraben during Rahul Gandhi’s Voter Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga, Bihar.

The BJP Mahila Morcha displayed placards, some of which read “Enough of Congress nonsense,” “Congress can't tolerate poor's son as PM,” and “Insult of a mother, not tolerable to an Indian son or daughter.”

Nagaland BJP Mahila Morcha president Tsachola Rothrong said that the incident has hurt the sentiments of Indians who value dignity and respect.

She maintained that even though Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav were no longer present when the comments were made, leaders were still accountable for what was said from their stage. According to her, the remarks should have been condemned immediately, instead of being followed by delays, blame-shifting and legal disputes.

Rothrong pointed out that in Indian tradition, a mother commanded reverence and that personal attacks of this nature went beyond political criticism. She added that insulting a departed mother amounted to insulting every family that respected the memory of its elders.

She acknowledged the condemnation of the incident by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, describing their response as an example of placing dignity above politics. However, she argued that the Congress leadership bore the larger moral responsibility.

The BJP leader demanded that Gandhi and his party issue an unconditional apology to the nation, introduce a disciplinary mechanism against the use of abusive language, and commit along with other parties to keeping family members, especially mothers, outside the scope of political attacks.

The Dimapur demonstration was part of similar protests staged across the country, including in Patna, Surat and Chhattisgarh. Rothrong warned that when political language degenerate into personal vilification, the damage was not only to the individual concerned but to the country as a whole.

She concluded by urging political leaders to maintain higher standards of public discourse and to focus their battles on policies and ideas rather than personal attacks.
