DIMAPUR — Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD) has strongly condemned the alleged sexual misconduct by a senior student at Sainik School Punglwa.

“Sainik School is a reputed institution that imparts not only academic knowledge but also discipline and values to students from across Nagaland and beyond. Parents send their children to this prestigious school with great hopes and trust, often making personal and financial sacrifices,” NWHD stated on Thursday.

The Hoho has strongly urged the school administration to take the matter with utmost seriousness by ensuring strict action and long-term preventive measures. It stated that such traumatic experiences could have lasting psychological impacts, including depression, anxiety and loss of trust.

Additionally, it called upon the administrations of all educational institutions to remain vigilant and take strong preventive steps against sexual harassment, especially those occurring under the guise of "ragging" by seniors. It felt that such acts must be dealt with firmly and without delay.

It appealed to work together to create safe, respectful and nurturing learning environments for all children.

In another statement, NWHD has appreciated Western Sumi Totimi Hoho (WSTH) for their commendable initiative in prohibiting the sale of traditional attires in open markets and roadsides stating that such practices not only undermined the cultural dignity and sanctity associated with traditional attires but also open avenues for misuse and misrepresentation. It has called for collective attention and action from all sections of our society.

“As Nagas, we are recognised and respected for our rich traditions and culture passed down by our forefathers. Our traditional attires are not mere garments; they carry deep cultural, historical and significance. It is the responsibility of every Naga to uphold, respect and protect the meaning and purpose embedded in each attire, as they represent our unique identity,” NWHD stated.

Terming the step taken by WSTH as ‘positive and timely,’ NWHD stated that it has set a strong example for other tribal communities to follow.

NWHD further encouraged women to pursue entrepreneurship in the field of traditional attire and textile crafts, provided it is done through the right channels that honour and uphold cultural values.

“Let us all come together to preserve, protect and promote the rich heritage of our traditional identity,” NWHD added.
