Muslim community in Manipur holds protest rally

Meitei Pangal (Muslim) staging a protest march against the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act at Khomidok in Manipur's Imphal East district on Tuesday.


  • IMPHAL — Meitei Pangal (Muslim) community in Manipur continued to stage a protest march against the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025.

  • After Sunday's demonstration in Lilong area in Thoubal district, a similar protest march was held at Kairang-Khomidok-Khabeisoi area in Imphal East district on Tuesday.

  • The protest march, which started from Heiru-makhong, passed through Epum Mapan, 7 MR and Kairang Awang before converging to the starting point, was held under the watch of security and organised by United Committee Kairang-Khomidok-Khabeisoi and local Jamait.

  • No untoward incidents were reported during the day’s procession.

  • Meanwhile, Manipur legislator Sheikh Noorul Hassan on Tuesday reiterated that he would challenge the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, in the Supreme Court within a week.

  • Speaking to a group of reporters at his residence at Kshetrigao in Imphal East district, Hassan, a National People’s Party MLA, said, “In my personal capacity, I am going to challenge the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, in the Supreme Court as it violates minorities rights.”

  • “It violates Article 26 and there are many sections and many areas that are contentious,” he said adding, “I will challenge it in the Supreme Court within seven days’ time as it needs preparation.”

  • On Sunday an irate mob stormed into the house of state BJP Minority Morcha's leader at Lilong Sambrukhong Mamei area in Thoubal district and set it ablaze. Following the incident, the district administration on Monday imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of BNSS 2023 in Lilong assembly constituency.
