Mon-Charaideo committee renamed Joint Peace Committee to strengthen peace, cooperation and communal harmony
DIMAPUR — The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing Mon district of Nagaland and Charaideo district of Assam, has been renamed the Joint Peace Committee (JPC) following a unanimous decision at a joint meeting held at the Konyak Union Office in Mon on Tuesday.
The meeting, hosted by the Konyak Union, also unanimously appointed Tingthok Konyak as president and Diganta Changmei as secretary general of the JPC for the 2026-2029 tenure.
The remaining vacant and required executive posts will be filled through the respective organisations.
The decisions were taken after detailed deliberations, with members emphasising the need to maintain peace, harmony, mutual cooperation and cordial relations among communities in the two neighbouring districts.
According to a joint press statement, the committee resolved that any incident, misunderstanding or situation that could affect relations between the communities or districts must first be communicated promptly to the concerned JPC officials.
All parties have been urged to exercise restraint and refrain from taking unilateral decisions or actions without prior consultation with the committee.

The meeting also resolved that criminal matters and unlawful activities should not be communalised.
Both sides will work collectively to address such cases in accordance with the law and established legal procedures, ensuring fair and impartial justice while discouraging attempts to disturb communal harmony.
To strengthen people-to-people relations, the JPC will organise an annual cultural exchange programme involving communities from both districts. The initiative aims to promote mutual understanding, preserve cultural heritage and foster peace, unity and brotherhood.
The committee also resolved to facilitate the construction of a Konyak Ahng Morung in Charaideo district and a Tai-Ahom Cultural Centre at Mon headquarters. The respective communities and organisations will identify and allot suitable sites for the proposed establishments.
On the issue of drug abuse and trafficking, the JPC resolved to urge the respective district administrations and police authorities to strengthen monitoring and take measures to curb the unchecked flow of drugs.
The committee will hold general meetings at least twice a year, with one meeting each in Mon and Charaideo districts. Special or emergency meetings may also be convened by the president and secretary general to discuss urgent matters and emerging situations.
The JPC will further issue official identity cards to its duly appointed office-bearers and members for identification and official purposes. The cards will be authenticated by the respective district administrations of Mon and Charaideo.
The members unanimously resolved to uphold mutual trust, cooperation, peaceful coexistence and collective responsibility, and reaffirmed the committee's role as a common platform for dialogue, consultation and peaceful resolution of issues affecting both districts while safeguarding their longstanding social, cultural and traditional ties.
