WOKHA — The much-anticipated Wokha Town Council (WTC) Daily Market was formally inaugurated in Wokha on Wednesday, with MLA Y Mhonbemo Humtsoe attending the event as the special guest and officially unveiling the market.
Addressing attendees, Humtsoe urged WTC members to set aside political affiliations and embrace a shared commitment to public service. He emphasised mutual respect, inclusive governance, and collective responsibility as guiding principles for civic leadership.
“True progress comes when we focus on the welfare of our people,” he stated, noting that several developmental projects are already underway in the district. He called on councillors to eschew selfish interests and work with sincerity for the common good.
Humtsoe also raised concerns about external interference stalling societal growth, particularly within Naga communities. Stressing the importance of inclusivity, he advocated women’s empowerment and encouraged structural reforms within the council to ensure gender equality.

Turning to urban development, the MLA highlighted the urgency of improving Wokha’s drainage systems and maintaining public cleanliness. “Collecting tolls alone will not bring development,” he remarked, urging the formation of dedicated committees to study government schemes and identify sustainable pathways for district-wide progress.
He also lauded the landowners whose support made the market project possible.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Renbemo Ezung echoed the need for public cooperation in preserving public infrastructure. He emphasised that while the government plays its part, citizens must actively take ownership by safeguarding and using public amenities responsibly.
