DIMAPUR — Member of Legislative Assembly from 6-Tening A/C, Namri Nchang has expressed deep concern over the continued disappearance and reported captivity of six Naga individuals from Konsaram village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.
In a statement, the MLA said the series of incidents began on May 13 with the killing of three church leaders, an incident that severely disturbed peace, harmony and communal understanding in the region.
Nchang said the situation further escalated following reports of abductions involving civilians from both communities, creating fear, uncertainty and tension among the people.
He acknowledged that, following mediation efforts, 14 individuals from both communities were safely released on May 17.
However, serious concern remains over the whereabouts and condition of six missing Naga individuals, including Rev. Manu Thiumai, pastor of Harup village, whose status remains unknown, he said.

Stating that the taking of civilian hostages or unlawful detention of innocent persons is against humanitarian values, constitutional principles, legal norms and customary traditions, the MLA said such acts only deepen mistrust and further endanger communal harmony in the region.
He appealed to both the Naga and Kuki communities to uphold peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, understanding and brotherhood, and urged people not to allow hatred, misunderstanding or violence to create enmity among communities.
Nchang also appealed to those responsible for the captivity to ensure the immediate and safe release of the missing persons.
He further urged the authorities to identify, investigate and take strict legal action against those involved in the incidents.
The MLA appealed to the Government of Manipur and the Government of India to intensify ongoing search operations and ensure a fair, transparent and time-bound inquiry so that justice can prevail and public confidence can be restored.
He also called upon civil society organisations, church bodies, community leaders and citizens to cooperate in de-escalation, peace-building efforts and the safe return of all missing individuals, irrespective of community affiliation.
Referring to Peren district, Nchang urged residents to continue upholding peace, harmony, mutual respect and understanding, despite the prevailing situation elsewhere.
He stressed that unlawful activities must be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law and called for collective efforts towards lasting peace and coexistence in the region.
