IMPHAL — Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved the construction of 5,000 new houses for the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Manipur under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY–G), according to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.
“Chouhan has approved the new houses for IDPs affected by the law and order crisis (ethnic violence) for the financial year 2025-26 after meeting with Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh last evening at his residence here in New Delhi,” the CM’s Secretariat stated in a press release on Tuesday.
“The state’s two deputy chief ministers Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho accompanied Khemchand while meeting with the union rural development minister.”

Chouhan received the three Manipuri leaders and assured all help in their bid to bring peace and normalcy in the state.
Earlier this month, the state government submitted a proposal for a special project under PMAY-G for the construction of 5,000 houses for IDPs affected by the ethnic violence.
The Union Rural Development Ministry also approved a special window of Awas+ 2024 household survey for capturing the details of the eligible affected households, the statement added. The state government has also been allowed to continue the process of registration of the eligible affected beneficiaries under the special project of PMAY-G.
The state government is also allowed to sanction houses for eligible beneficiaries under the special project to whom assistance (one or more instalments) was released earlier under the PMAY-G, but whose houses have been destroyed during the ethnic violence.
It may be mentioned that the state government aims to resettle more than 10,000 families displaced by the ethnic violence in the state, consisting of more than 40,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) by the end of March this year.
So far, about 3,700 families consisting of about 16,500 IDPs have been successfully resettled, according to officials. In December last year, it was stated that about 10,000 IDPs from 2,200 families had been resettled in the state.
Manipur has witnessed ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo communities since May 3, 2023, which has led to more than 260 deaths and left about 60,000 displaced.
