Medziphema Town Council has made household composting mandatory for biodegradable kitchen waste, with residents given 30 days to comply under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
DIMAPUR — The Medziphema Town Council (MTC) has made it mandatory for households in Medziphema town to establish and maintain suitable composting facilities for the treatment of biodegradable kitchen waste.
Additional Deputy Commissioner and Executive Officer, MTC, P James Swu issued the order in pursuance of the Home Department’s notification on the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
According to a DIPR report, the move aims to promote decentralised management of biodegradable waste and ensure a clean and sustainable Medziphema town.
According to the order, households unable to undertake individual composting due to space constraints or other practical difficulties may form clusters or adopt common composting arrangements at suitable locations.

All households have been directed to comply with the order within 30 days from the date of its issuance.
The Ward Sanitation Committee will facilitate cluster-based composting arrangements wherever necessary.
The order further stated that failure to comply, including continued disposal of biodegradable kitchen waste through the town council’s garbage collection system, would be treated as non-compliance and may attract appropriate action under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, and other applicable laws.
All residents have been directed to extend full cooperation for the strict implementation of the order, which has come into force with immediate effect.
