MOKOKCHUNG — A fire gutted nine shops and partially damaged five others, while also affecting adjacent buildings in Mokokchung town on Tuesday, officials said.
The blaze broke out below the Mokokchung Municipal Council Shopping Complex at Dilong Ward around 12:30 pm.
Inspector Keleseho Stephen Tsukru of the Mokokchung Fire Station said the control room received the first alert at 12:36 pm, following which four fire tenders from the North and South fire stations were pressed into service.

Fire officials said the flames spread from the shops to a nearby reinforced cement concrete (RCC) building. While one adjoining structure sustained partial damage, the opposite building suffered extensive damage to its top floor and partial damage to the ground floor.
The affected top floor housed an electronic repair service centre, an NGO office, a library and a restaurant.
Firefighters battled the blaze for over two hours, with tenders refilled five times during the operation before the fire was brought under control.
No casualties were reported. The cause of the fire and the extent of property loss are under investigation.
