IMPHAL — Mother’s Care Children Hospital and Research Centre (MCCHRC) in Imphal has announced the successful discharge of one of the smallest surviving preterm babies in Northeast India.

Born as part of triplets at just seven months of gestation, the infant weighed only 430 grams at birth, while her siblings weighed 800 grams and 1,000 grams respectively. All three were shifted to MCCHRC for advanced neonatal care.

After months of specialized treatment, the baby now weighs 1.3 kilograms and is thriving on full oral feeds, the hospital said in a press release.

“Managing such extreme prematurity required labour-intensive monitoring, advanced neonatal support systems, strict asepsis, and individualized feeding strategies,” MCCHRC stated, crediting the dedication of its doctors, nurses, and caregivers for the survival of the infant.

Dr. Sanasam Manimukta, consultant at the 100-bedded paediatric and neonatal healthcare institution, said every milestone was a result of “combined efforts of the medical team and the family, strengthened by the support of Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Dr. Kh. Ratankumar Singh.”

The parents expressed gratitude, recalling moments of fear for their baby’s survival. “We never imagined our little one, born so tiny, would make it this far,” they said.

The hospital described the case as a beacon of hope for families facing the challenges of preterm birth, reflecting its mission to advance neonatal survival rates in Manipur and the wider Northeast region.
