IMPHAL — Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Sunday stated that the government will develop Jiribam into a model district after consulting with town planning experts.
He was interacting with media persons on the sidelines of inspecting the proposed development site of the Inter-State Truck Terminus in the Jiribam district.
The chief minister is currently on a two-day visit to Jiribam district and adjoining areas of south Assam for peace-building efforts in Jiribam. The Jiribam district headquarters is located about 220 km west of Imphal and borders Assam's Cachar district.
Khemchand Singh said that he would look into the possibilities of taking up other tourism projects at the site of the Inter-State Truck Terminus in consultation with the Town Planning Department.

“Every community wants peace, and we need to remove the trust deficit. My objective is to restore peace,” he said.
Regarding his visit to Jiribam district, he stated that his ongoing visit was the second after becoming the chief minister of the state and maintained that his government’s objective is to strengthen the bonding among different communities and restore peace in the state.
Later, sharing photographs of the event in a Facebook post, Khemchand wrote, “Visited the Inter-State Truck Terminus at Lakhipur, Jiribam, today and undertook a comprehensive review of its existing infrastructure and operational systems. Closely examined the facilities to assess their readiness and identify areas for improvement, with a focus on enhancing efficiency and functionality.
“This terminus is pivotal for facilitating the seamless movement of goods across the region. I am confident that with strengthened operational efficiency and timely augmentation of infrastructure, it will significantly boost trade and logistics activities. This, in turn, will generate diversified employment opportunities and contribute to sustained economic growth, ensuring equitable and inclusive development for the district.”
Earlier in the day, Khemchand, accompanied by MLAs and senior officials of the state government, led a tree plantation drive at the site, which was organised by the Jiribam Forest Division.
On Saturday, he, along with nine BJP MLAs and state BJP President A Sharda Devi, besides senior state officials, travelled to Jiribam district by road on NH 37, covering 220 km in six hours.
Khemchand's visit to Jiribam came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah had directed to accelerate the present peace process and consolidate the growing bonhomie among different communities during a meeting in New Delhi on April 1.
Manipur has been under unrest since May 3, 2023, which resulted in the killing of more than 260 persons and displaced about 60,000 persons.
