IMPHAL — The United Naga Council (UNC), an apex body of the Naga community in Manipur, has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to tackle the influx of illegal immigrants in Manipur and other Northeast states.
Expressing concern over the infiltration of illegal immigrants, the UNC, in a memorandum addressed to the prime minister on Saturday, urged the central government to take immediate and effective measures to identify and deport illegal immigrants.
“While we appreciate your vocal stance on this issue during your visits to Assam, we are concerned about the perceived silence on this matter when you visit other Northeastern states, particularly Manipur,” says the Memorandum signed by UNC President Ng Lorho and General Secretary Vareiyo Shatsang.

“A uniform approach is essential to address this issue, which affects the demographic balance and poses a threat to the identity and rights of indigenous communities across the region.”
It pointed out that the influx of illegal immigrants has significant demographic, social and economic implications for the people of Manipur and the entire Northeast region, posing challenges during the census and delimitation process which could alter the representation of indigenous communities in the region.
Requesting the central government to provide necessary support and relief to the affected communities, the memorandum also urged checking the influx of illegal immigrants in the state through the rule of law, like the updation of NRC and the constitution of a population commission.
“We believe that a uniform yardstick is necessary to address this issue and salvage the interests of native and indigenous peoples. We request your intervention to ensure that the concerns of the people are addressed and a comprehensive policy is put (in place) to tackle the problem,” it added.
