Manipur celebrates Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba with rituals, feasts and prayers marking the Meitei New Year.

IMPHAL — Manipur on Thursday celebrated Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba, marking the arrival of the Meitei New Year with devotion and celebration.
The festival is celebrated on the first day of the Manipuri month Sajibu, which falls in the month of March or April.
It is a time for families to come together, prepare traditional feasts from vegetables to be offered to deities for a grand feast for families, and make offerings to three deities and ancestors at their doorsteps for the protection of the family.
Married women give gifts to their parents and brothers on the occasion.
The youths seek the blessings of the elders.

A customary ritual sees people climbing Cheiraoching hill or other nearby peaks, believing that the ascent will elevate their fortunes in the coming year.
Khwairamband Keithel, main market in Imphal, was abuzz on the eve of the festival with activity as people thronged markets to buy fresh vegetables and ritual items.
The iconic Nupi Keithel (Women Market) witnessed heavy footfall, with vendors doing brisk business amid the festive spirit.
Cheiraoba, deeply ingrained in Manipuri culture, has been celebrated for generations as a time to seek divine blessings and prosperity.
The festival saw more enthusiastic participation despite prevailing tension since last year, although it had been observed in a subdued manner due to unrest and violence in 2023 and 2024.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla conveyed heartiest greetings and best wishes to the people of Manipur on the occasion of Sajibu Cheiraoba.
In his message, Bhalla said, “Cheiraoba signifies renewal, hope, and the beginning of a New Year filled with optimism and aspirations. The festival reflects rich cultural heritage and age-old traditions that promote family bonding, respect for elders, and harmony within society.”
Joining in, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh also extended warm wishes for Cheiraoba, the festival which is considered as a harbinger of prosperity and progress.
Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Th Satyabrata Singh offered warm greetings to the people with the hope that the New Year will be marked by kindness, courage to dream and the strength to rise above division.
