DIMAPUR — A major landslide along the Dikhu River, locally known as Yungnyu River, near the boundary of Yaongyimsen village in Mokokchung district and Yongshei village in Longleng district has diverted the river into a new channel, but officials said there was no immediate danger as the water was flowing normally.
Yongshei Village Council chairman Chingyang told Eastern Mirror that the landslide may have occurred around September 28. A team travelled on foot to the site on Thursday to assess the situation, as there is no motorable road leading to the area. The team reached the site around 1 pm.
He said that the landslide was extensive and initially raised concerns that it may have completely blocked the river. However, the water had carved out a new channel and was flowing freely when the team arrived.
According to Chingyang, the newly formed channel is about 20 feet wide. While debris and small rocks were still falling intermittently, he shared that there was no immediate danger and urged people not to panic.

The chairman said that the affected stretch is known as Lakhak-ie in Yongshei village. He described it as a wide and deep section of the river where a large volume of water accumulates. The affected land, he said, belongs to Yaongyimsen village.
Meanwhile, ADC Longleng Thungchanbemo Tungoe said that the administration received information about the landslide on September 28.
He informed that the river had subsequently diverted naturally and, according to the latest report received on Thursday, was flowing normally.
Tungoe added that people living downstream had been advised to take precautionary measures, while adding that there was no need for panic at present.
